Tarquinia

When Rome and Lazio play against each other, it’s always a bit hectic around where Max lives, near the Olympic Stadium. With fans reaching near fever pitch by 11am, we decided to take the car and head outside of Rome for the day. Max needed to head to the coast to run some errands and so it was the perfect opportunity to visit Tarquinia. I’ve got to say that it was a place that was not on my radar at all. However, Max was so enthusiastic about going there, I thought it boded well! Just an hour and fifteen minutes outside of Rome, Tarquinia is in the northern reaches of Lazio, close to Tuscany. It’s a charming town steeped in history and surrounded by stunning countryside. This ancient Etruscan city is a hidden gem waiting to be explored by visitors looking for an off the beaten track typical Italian town, minus the usual graffiti.

Tarquinia is best known for its well-preserved Etruscan tombs, which date back to the 7th and 8th centuries BC. These underground burial chambers are adorned with intricate frescoes depicting scenes from Etruscan life and mythology, providing a fascinating glimpse into the ancient civilisation that once inhabited the area. The Tomb of the Leopards and the Tomb of the Shields and Chairs are just two of the many tombs that can be visited in the town.

In addition to its archaeological wonders, Tarquinia also boasts a charming medieval old town, with narrow cobblestone streets lined with quaint shops and restaurants. The town’s main square, Piazza Cavour, is a lively hub where locals gather to socialise and enjoy a coffee or gelato. The Cathedral of Santa Margherita, with its striking Romanesque facade, is another must-see attraction in the old town.

For those looking to soak up the sun and enjoy the beautiful Italian coastline, Tarquinia offers easy access to the nearby beaches of Lido di Tarquinia and Marina Velca. These sandy shores are perfect for relaxing and swimming, and are popular with both locals and tourists during the summer months.

Foodies will also love Tarquinia, as the town is home to a number of excellent restaurants serving up traditional Italian cuisine. From fresh seafood to homemade pasta dishes, visitors are sure to find something to satisfy their taste buds in Tarquinia.

Overall, Tarquinia is a destination that offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Whether you’re interested in exploring ancient ruins, relaxing on the beach, or indulging in delicious Italian food, Tarquinia has something for everyone. So why not add this hidden gem to your travel itinerary and discover the magic of this enchanting town in Lazio, Italy.
