Oh, Frascati, I have loved you for so long! I have been making a pilgrimage to this hillside town in the so-called “Castelli Romani” near enough every time that I visited Italy for the past 18 years. As a regular visitor to Frascati, I have always been drawn in by its beauty, history, and of course, its delectable wine. Located just a short drive from Rome, or a hop, skip and a jump on the train from Termini, Frascati offers a peaceful escape from the bustling city.
On a sunny January afternoon, Max and I decided to make the short journey from Rome to Frascati, eager to indulge in a delicious meal and take in the stunning views of the Roman countryside, as well as a great view of Rome from afar.
We made our way to one of the town’s charming trattorias, where we were welcomed with warm hospitality and a menu filled with mouthwatering dishes made from locally sourced ingredients. As we settled in at a cozy outdoor table, overlooking a small piazza, we ordered a glass of crisp Frascati wine to start the meal the right way!
For my main course, I opted for a classic pasta dish- fettucine funghi porcini, a true taste of Italian cuisine at its finest. Each bite was a burst of flavour, and I savoured every mouthful as I soaked up the late January sun, feeling a sense of contentment wash over me. The earthiness of the mushroom dish and the crispness of the white wine was a heavenly combination.
The lunch was slow, delicious and gave us both time to chat about the week that had just been and plan future trips outside of the eternal city. Afterwards, we took a leisurely stroll through the town, stopping to admire the historic architecture and browse the local shops.
We’re also in the Carnevale period at the moment and so it really would have been remiss of us not to indulge in the particular sweet bites that are on offer during this season! More on this in the next post…
As we made our way back to Rome, filled with good food, good wine, and a heart full of memories, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and tranquility of Frascati. This lunchtime trip had been a perfect blend of relaxation, indulgence, and cultural immersion, and I knew that I would be back again soon to savour more of what this enchanting town has to offer. Frascati truly is a taste of heaven, just a short drive away from the bustling streets of Rome.
